Perrin finally has his name on a notice. Unfortunately, it is a wanted notice.

At thirteen, he is squire to Sir Charles and the boy a young dragon named Haku trusts. Sir Kelvin’s hunt has put their names on posting boards across the country. Every innkeeper, ferryman, and curious stranger could now give the hunter another road to follow. Even a letter home is too dangerous to send.

Hidden in a ruined farmhouse on Cold Fell, Perrin has a winter’s work ahead of him: help Haku learn to carry a rider, control his fire, and respond before trouble reaches them. Perrin is good with tools and generous with explanations. He is less practiced at admitting when the dragon has a reason to say no.

As riders begin searching the hills, mistakes that once cost an afternoon can cost much more. Perrin must earn Haku’s trust, understand what the dragon can safely do, and stop asking for more simply because he is frightened of falling behind.
