At thirteen, he is squire to Sir Charles and the only person Haku will follow. Keeping a growing dragon fed, quiet, and out of sight takes most of his day. Keeping his own mouth shut is considerably harder.
Sir Kelvin is collecting stories along the road: burned timber, strange tracks, a boy who buys too much bread. Every useful thing Perrin does gives the hunter another piece to follow.
As familiar roads become dangerous, Perrin and Charles must find a way to protect Haku. Clever plans have kept them moving, but Perrin is learning that caring for a dragon means listening to him, too.
